WHAT IS SNAP E&T?

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Employment and Training (SNAP E&T) is a program of the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS). Every state in the country receives federal funding to operate a SNAP E&T program. In Rhode Island, SNAP E&T is a program of the Department of Human Services (RI DHS).

The program is designed to provide SNAP recipients with a comprehensive set of services and supports, some of which are not typically covered by federal funding. Services include in-depth assessments; education and training; supplemental services like employment counseling and job retention services; and supports like transportation vouchers, childcare subsidies, and paid test and certification fees, interview clothing and more, that help participants successfully complete training, interview for jobs and retain those jobs once they are employed.

WHO DOES RI SNAP E&T HELP?

For the state’s SNAP recipients, it’s a package of training and services designed to help the unemployed or underemployed gain education and vocational skills to help them find good jobs.

For RI SNAP E&T subcontractors it’s a funding source providing 50% reimbursement grants for nonfederal funds spent on services provided to SNAP recipients, and an opportunity to build workforce education and training programs that effectively help SNAP recipients transition to employment.

For agencies interested in becoming an approved RI SNAP E&T subcontractor, it is a new funding source that will allow them to build capacity and strengthen their education and training programs to better meet the needs of SNAP recipients.

For employers it’s a way to build a pipeline of new hires with the skills and attributes your business needs.
